Multilingual Learners The North Providence Public Schools Multilingual Learner’s program supports students who: speak other languages, are learning English, and who may have recently moved to the United States.
Rhode Island is a member of WIDA, a multi-state partnership that has created an English language proficiency test called: ACCESS for MLLs (Assessing Comprehension and Communication State to State for MLLs).
ACCESS for MLLs is administered every year to active MLL, students receiving English language support. ACCESS testing is also administered yearly to EBNE (Eligable but not Enrolled Students), students who’s guardians have waived English Language services. ACCESS state mandated testing takes place until students in program reach the English language proficiency guidelines set by RIDE.
ACCESS scores are used to drive instruction and MLL services. ELLEVATION is a online platform that empowers educators to improve outcomes for MLLs and provides the tools needed to build systems of student support used by North Providence Public Schools.
When a MLL student reaches English proficiency determined by the exit criteria set by RIDE, the student exits the MLL program and is monitored for two years by a MLL Specialist.
